Up the Ladder: Lady Heroine

By Benjamin Millerman

Down in Orlando Florida, a storm is cooking. No, not a traditional weather storm, but a band striking like lightning, hit after hit. Their style is one rooted in alternative rock yet is hard to define, which they like, “we want to stay away from labels as to not box ourselves in”. With a wide variety of sounds that they incorporate from their daily listening habits, Lady Heroine is a band still finding their sound, so you better start tuning in now.

The group has known each other for longer than you might expect, fostering a deeper connection beyond the music. Andy and Felix have been friends since early childhood, adding Kait to the squad during high school. Finally, Cesar joined the party after working at Home Depot with Felix. Since then the band has been hard at work, crafting their sound and producing music for the people. As it often is with new bands, the start is always a bit bumpy, but the group is making the most of it, enjoying the ride.

Their biggest struggle is marketing. With the oversaturation of social media, consistency is key. This is something the band has slowly come to realize, and they have quickly adapted. They use TikTok as an outlet to promote their music by spamming a song of theirs they are proud of, hoping for good engagement. The results have been mixed, being very hit or miss depending on what the algorithm prefers at the time.

However, social media is not the only way they build their fanbase. Their live performances have begun to garner an audience, often performing in the local Orlando area, and recently even leaving their home state, traveling to perform in New York City, “We are absolutely grateful that we had support this far away from our hometown”.Their audience is growing, and with each show, the audience gets more and more receptive to the music the band plays. Yet the audience isn’t the only growing component as the band gains comfortability on stage with every passing show, making each one better than the last.

These opportunities come from the countless songs released by Lady Heroine specifically with Sadie. Sadie blew up through their promotional tactics, and they have continued to promote it, riding the strong wave as far as they can before they catch the next one. It is songs like these that give them the opportunity to travel to places like New York and continue to help them grow.

But of course, these aren’t their only catchy songs. Songs like If They Knew and Blue Dreams are songs the band finds underrated, alongside countless others. It is songs like these that you are able to discover when you dive deeper into an artist after hearing their hit song, something I would highly recommend. The band believed these songs alongside Small Time Flirt and Let Her would’ve been picked up by the algorithm but with all of its complexity, it didn’t turn out that way. The diversity of the music they create, while all clearly demonstrating an immense level of talent shows just how picky and choosy the algorithm is and how you must go deeper than the surface to find the true treasure.

This treasure is carefully created by the band. In the beginning, the band would receive their ideas from Kait or Felix and would be completed with the rest of the band but as the tide turns, the band now crafts individually, bringing it back together in the end. This is clearly seen in the differing styles throughout their latest album, yet despite the vibe switches, the album runs flawlessly, a testament to the skill and craft the band puts into their work. Constant inspiration from all over impacts how the band creates whether “a certain structure or rhythm, melodies and progressions and how they make us feel”. Everything is taken into account, and that’s what makes the music so impressive.

The latest album, Almost follows this narrative, implying that their best work is still to come and they are currently “almost” there. The cover created by the talented Linnea Strid depicted someone “almost” drowning with the painting itself having aspects that were “almost” finished.

Beyond just the creativity of their album itself, the name Lady Heroine is one that piques curiosity. The name came from the fact that the band wanted a juxtaposition, “something pretty (Lady) paired with something ugly (Heroin)”. However, they didn’t want to upset anyone seriously impacted by such a drug so they chose to add an e at the end, to soften the expression.

From here, Lady Heroine is going to continue to improve. They are planning on recording some new songs soon and testing them out at live shows so be sure to attend if you are in the area! At the end of the day, the band wants this journey to be something they can make a career of off and with the sound they are producing and the trajectory they are on, this dream isn’t far away on the horizon.
