Barbz, Hotties, we have a problem.
Two of our favorite rappers are arguing, and it’s getting ugly. On January 26, Megan Thee Stallion
dropped “Hiss,” a fiery rap with a line that listeners have interpreted as a diss towards Nicki Minaj, often
referred to as the Queen of Rap. The line reads “These hoes mad at Megan’s law,” referencing the 1994
act that mandates law enforcement to make a list of all registered sex offenders available to the public.
Many assumed this was about Nicki’s husband, Kenneth Petty, a registered sex offender who completed
one year of house arrest after not registering his new address after moving to California.
In the days following the release of “Hiss,” Nicki Minaj took to Twitter, mainly coming after Megan’s
dead mother and injured foot after being shot by artist Tory Lanez. She was met with mixed reactions,
some supporting her saying Megan started the insults first, others claiming Nicki’s insults were low blows
and inappropriate.
Then, on January 29, three days after “Hiss,” Nicki released “Big Foot,” a diss track (although “diss” may
be an understatement) directed at Megan whose title directly makes fun of Megan’s shooting. Nicki once
again comes after Megan’s mother, saying that Megan was “lyin’ on [her] dead mama.” She also implies
that Megan offers sex in exchange for free verses or help with writing her songs, and explicitly claps back
against the “Megan’s law” line. Overall, “Big Foot” is a pretty crazy response that makes me believe this
drama is far from over.
While this feud may seem like it came out of nowhere, there is some history behind it.
It may have started with Megan’s 2020 collaboration with Cardi B, “WAP.” Nicki and Cardi have a
well-known feud, with Nicki throwing jabs at Cardi’s husband, Offset, and her readiness to be a mother,
and Cardi literally throwing jabs (i.e. her shoe!) at Nicki at New York Fashion Week in 2018. The two
have since been at odds and noticeably do not get along. So, Nicki may have perceived Megan’s
collaboration with Cardi as a betrayal, especially after Nicki and Megan released “Hot Girl Summer” just
one year prior. This is no guarantee, though, as Nicki has not publicly expressed any negative feelings on
the topic.
That’s not all, though. Nicki claims that Megan tried to pressure her to drink alcohol even though she may
have been pregnant, to which Megan (allegedly) responded, “You can go to the clinic,” which Nicki took
as an abortion reference. Megan tweeted a response, saying just “LIE.” Nicki, though, repeatedly calls
Megan a liar, arguing that she was only shot in one foot even though Megan claims she was shot in both.
Clearly, there’s a lot of moving parts to this feud. The Gossip Girl in me thinks the drama is juicy, the
Barb in me wants Nicki to release more music, but as a huge fan of both artists, I hope they resolve things
soon because they are both incredible rappers and have been very influential in the past years.
(Plus another collab wouldn’t hurt.)
