New Music Monday 1/13/20

We’re back from a few weeks of holiday hiatus but super excited for another year of great music. Here’s all the drops that we missed out between the end of the year and now. Projects released near the very end of the year often get overlooked but these definitely can’t be missed.

G Herbo- Sessions

G Herbo has had a fantastic decade to say the least, as the lyrical face of Chicago’s drill scene, G Herbo has managed to stay relevant and build a strong fanbase ever since blowing with 2014’s Welcome to Fazoland. To end the decade G Herbo has blessed us with the concise and raw Sessions, one of his best projects in a while. All of the songs here feature G Herbo coming with intense, raw emotion reflecting on his come up from Chicago and the trauma he has to deal with from his past. This is a must listen for Herbo fans and even if you are unfamiliar you should definitely check it out.

Best Tracks: Summer is Cancelled, Can’t Sleep, My Bro’s a Legend, That Boy

Popcaan- Vanquish

Jamaican dancehall legend dropped his first album with Drake’s label OVO Sound to finish off 2019. I don’t think fans were expecting Popcaan to follow up his excellent 2018 release, Forever so soon, but he has and definitely does not disappoint. This album is overall quite subdued, with Popcaan reflectively crooning about his fame, faith and love for smoking. As always, Popcaan really makes you feel what he is saying and sounds great as he does. Vanquish  also features Popcaan bodying a trap instrumental on “Happy and Wealthy,” which though unexpected goes over very well.

Best Tracks: Gimme Love, One Ting Alone, Father God ah Lead, Happy and Wealthy

Kaytranada- BUBBA

Montreal’s own, Kaytranada came in late with one of the best albums of the year with BUBBA. Kaytranada expands on his signature sound combining Electronic, R&B and Hip hop to make for a tracklist filled with bumping, feel good sounds. This album is packed to the brim with fantastic features with some of the best being from VanJess on “Taste,” and Teedra Moses on “Culture.” This is one of those albums you can throw on and not skip a song- great listen.

Best Tracks: 2 The Music, Taste, What You Need, Freefall, Culture

Roc Marciano- Marcielago

Underground vet Roc Marciano ended 2019 with another quality release. This tape features Marciano doing his thing, spitting wordy, braggadocious, mafioso feeling bars over sample heavy beats. As always, there are tons of lyrical gems littered throughout the tape and you will find some of the smoothest sampling of anything released this year.

Best Tracks; Richard Gear, Boosie Fade, God Loves You

Fastlane Wez and M Huncho- Winning

Two of the UK’s up and coming crooners linked up for one of 2019’s smoothest bangers. This is just a through and through great song. Anyone who’s into the UK scene is bound to enjoy and even if you aren’t I would recommend. Check out the video below.
